Literacy Programs & Services

The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County (LV Wayne) is to promote increased literacy in our community. Dedicated, well-trained volunteer tutors provide free instruction in reading and writing, English as a Second Language (ESL), and other topics as appropriate. We can also provide worksite programs for employers or help your community group start your own tutoring program. At this time we do not have any programs for children.

Literacy

LV Wayne works with adults who live or work in Wayne County and read at or below the 8th-grade level. We serve between 150 and 200 students per year. Our adult learners range in age from 16 to 86 and come from many different backgrounds. All services are provided free of charge to the student.

Most of our teaching is one-to-one tutoring. All programs are student-centered and individualized to the adult learners’ own goals and needs. Whether one-to-one or in small groups, we believe instruction should be a collaborative relationship and that tutors learn just as much from their students.
