About Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County
In Wayne County, NY 1 in 12 adults lack very basic reading skills.* Thousands more need help to function well in today’s society.
Low literacy levels are strongly linked to poverty, crime, employee accidents, and school dropouts. When these things exist in our community, we all pay a price in some way.
The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County is to change lives through literacy. We provide opportunities for adults to learn, help children succeed in school, and promote reading & book ownership.
As participants gain skills, they become more active and effective at home, at school, at work, and as citizens. They in turn help improve the entire community.
In 2019 we proudly celebrated our 40th Anniversary. Founded in 1979 with just a small group of volunteers, our programs have grown to support over 2500 children and adults annually.
The generosity of people like you makes this possible.

Success Story
The Boyd Kimball Match of the Year Award
The Boyd Kimball Match of the Year Award is given to a student and tutor pair whose learning relationship goes above and beyond the norm. A plaque of winners is displayed at the office.
In the past, Sharon was an on again / off again adult learner. She didn’t enjoy testing and preferred reading the same books over and over. Because of this, she was not really learning or growing in her education. One day she reached out to her fellow church member, Linda, for help. Linda, being connected with Literacy Volunteers for many years, knew exactly how to assist.
Linda encouraged Sharon to officially enroll in Basic Literacy classes once again and agreed to be her personal Tutor. They met weekly and worked diligently to improve Sharon’s ability to read; first at their shared church and then later in Linda’s community business. Over time, Linda introduced Sharon to new, more challenging books that she would grow to enjoy. Linda even started adding math skills to her weekly lessons.
Now, Sharon takes pride in the yearly testing process and takes joy in knowing she learned new skills throughout the year. In 2020, after their third year of working together, Sharon enjoyed knowing she received the highest point improvement among all Learners tested that year. We cannot wait to see the heights to which this pair will soar in years to come.
Congratulations Sharon & Linda!
