Tutoring FAQs

Who are the adult learners?

Our tutoring programs serve adults 16 years of age or older and not enrolled in school. Some have moved here from other countries. Others grew up here, but for a variety of reasons struggle to read and write. In addition to their educational needs, they face the same issues – jobs, childcare, transportation, etc. – as other busy adults.

Do I need teaching experience or need to know another language?

No! All Tutors complete training before working with an adult Learner. In addition, our staff provide guidance and professional support throughout the tutoring process. We do ask that Tutors already have their High School Diploma or equivalent.

How much time does it take?

A typical Tutor/Learner pairing meets weekly for 2 hours for at least 4 months of the year. However, many are eager to do more and we encourage this! However, if you are a frequent traveler or need to spend a season living in another area, no need to scratch tutoring off your list. Learners are asked to commit to a learning contract of no less than 30 in-person hours with a tutor (approximately 16 weeks) before leaving the program. Learners who cannot commit to this length of time and consistent attendance cannot be guaranteed a place in programming.

Where do classes meet?

Our meetings take place in public locations across the county; preferably at your local library. The Learner(s) and Tutor coordinate the meeting times that work best for everyone involved. Any location that is quiet and conducive to learning will work: a coffee shop, your local church, or community center. However, for the safety of all involved, we do ask that tutoring not take place in private homes.
